Finding a new home for an unwanted pet can be challenging, but it is important not to release them into the wild for their own safety and the health of the ecosystem. With good care, milksnakes can live 20 years or more. They’re manageably-sized, fairly hardy, and generally tolerate human interaction well, which makes them good pets for people who are new to snakes. They are an active snake that you will regularly see roaming the cage at night. Due to their vivid coloring, milksnakes are among the most popular pet snakes in the United States. They are a long term commitment that many people do not consider when they purchase them. The Pueblan Milk Snake makes a great pet. They usually reach 4-6 feet in length (depending on subspecies). Milks snakes can live for more than twenty years. They are hardy and quite docile, and usually tolerate handling well, making them a good pet. Here at Ferrets and Friends, we feed our adult snake, Natasha, one adult mouse every two weeks. A general rule of thumb is using prey that is 1.5 times the girth of the snake at its thickest point. It is important to provide appropriate sized meals for your milk snake on a regular basis. A common coloration includes apricot or orange coloring on what would normally be the white bands. However, those instances are rare and usually occur in the wild rather than captive environments. Some adult specimens have been reported to be significantly larger, reaching a total length of up to 72 inches. In the pet trade, other color mutations have been selected through breeding. Generally, the size of a Pueblan Milk Snake when fully-grown is somewhere between 24 and 48 inches in length. In the wild, most Pueblan Milk Snakes have red, white, and black bands of color. Milk snakes are primarily carnivorous, and they consume a wide variety of prey, including mammals and birds. Like most snakes, they are escape artists so an enclosure with a locking mechanism is recommended. Adult snakes will be about the same girth as an adult corn snake, but may be significantly shorter in length. Obviously, babies can be kept in smaller cages. I recommend using a cage that’s 4 wide x 2 deep for adult specimens, as they tend to burrow around their cages actively. Pueblan Milks Snakes are a good snake for beginners as they do not have complicated humidity requirements, nor do they require much space. The Honduran milk snake is one of the largest of its species, reaching an average adult length of about five feet.
